Critical Thinking Blog Post #3- Research Paper Topic Brainstorming

For my research paper, I am interest in how robots and clones are portraying in films. Robots and clones are two very different topics because I believe that human clones are closer to be more like humans than robots. Most films are focus on robots, such as, The Terminator, is a popular film, known as, how robots came to empower humankind but one has managed to wonder how humans feel. Robots are machines that act like a computer and not like humans. One scene from The Terminator inspires me to research about artificial intelligence. John told the Terminator that he was feeling sad for not being able to be with his dad. After the Terminator asked what was sad and wonder about the emotion of sad. When John answer him, “Have you ever felt sad or pain?” made me realize that artificial intelligence are smarter than humans but can’t feel emotions like humans can.
A popular TV show called Orphan Black is about a young woman named, Sarah Manning, that experience seeing a woman, who looks like her, jump in front of the train. As Sarah took over the woman’s life, she finds out that the woman has been in contact with other women who looks like her. Sarah meets Alison, who is a soccer mom, and she then meets Cosima, who is college student with a biology major. They all learn that they are someone’s experiment who created clones and many other clones are out there around the world. Questions started rising to my mind as the show continues. I started to wonder that if cloning were possible, then there would be no difference to determine if someone is a clone.  Beside the fact that clones act more like humans than artificial intelligence, is what are the benefits of cloning? Clones are just copies and not the original, so what would happen if the organs of a clone don’t function properly like a humans? These questions encourage me to find the answer and learn more about human cloning.

Critical Thinking Post #2

"Popular Science" Today

Cosmos: A Spacetime Odysseys episode left me wanting to learn more about the universe. The tone of show was optimistic because it seems to encourage people to learn more and see how the universe works. Neil deGrasse Tyson looks passionate and seem to know what he is talking about. This show makes me feel there are more things to discover but in the past on how some scientists are unrecognized or how humans can be relating to a fruit. I think this show values science because it talks about facts that I have not learned anywhere but in the show and explores to every detail of a fact.
The show Cosmos does offer a different view on science by explore on how science existed and people who try to figure out how the universe works. The Cosmos show doesn’t give basic facts but with along the facts, there are details.  In school, I learn that Galileo was the first who came up with the theory that the sun is in the middle of the universe instead of the earth. Cosmos explains there were other scientists that thought about this theory before Galileo prove the theory right. The story that really got my interest is Bruno. Giordano Bruno was one of who discover that earth wasn’t in the middle of the universe by reading books ban from the church and he isn’t well known. He also had a dream he see the sun and realizes it was another star. He later decided to tell this vision to Oxford University but people laugh at him. Cosmos makes discovery about people don’t talk about. I never heard of Giordano Bruno but his story is still interesting just like Galileo’s story is.  People should learn more about a than just basic fact but dig for more information.

Critical Thinking Post #1

Welcome to my Blog ...

My name is Lissett Aviles and this is my last semester in LaGuardia Community College. My major is Liberal Arts: Social Science and Humanities. During my high school years, I enter a program called Early College for high school students to take college courses during their high school years. I decided to stay in LaGuardia after I graduate high school because I only need to take a few more courses. After I graduate LaGuardia, I want to go to SUNY College at Brockport and move to Long Island. I am planning to study early childhood education and become a bilingual elementary teacher.
Science and humanities are two very different topics and I don’t know which one is better to learn more about. I think I am more of a humanities person than a science person. Although I do love to learn about science but sometimes, it could get a little bit complicated. When I took philosophy and fundamental communication, at one point, we talk about technology and the future with humanities. It seems that people now have a negative opinion on technology taking over and making the future all dark while when technology first came out, people thought of a brighter future. Two movie animations show this concept. A Disney movie Meet the Robinsons, is a animated film where a boy goes to the future and sees how colorful the world is because of the advance technology. A year later, Disney did another film called WALL-E but this shows on how technology took over the world and people didn't much care on how the earth was left like. I feel humans should be more careful with technology in the future.
